Succulent and Deadly

Nishiazabu Orange

Nishiazabu Orange popped up in the neighborhood about six months ago, but it’s one of the better bakeries in the area. True to its name, the interior of the store is completely decked out in orange. The glass showcase in the small store has about 20 different kinds of individual cakes in addition to a few small whole cakes. The cakes are a little pricey at about 500 yen to 600 yen apiece on average, but they are large enough to be satisfying.

One of my more memorable cakes was the mille-feuille, a popular French pastry with custard stuck between several sheets of baked pastry with strawberries on top. Patrick has had the chocolate cake as well as the pistachio one (pmk: the pistachio cake was a nice little cake, but was seriously lacking in the pistachio flavor department.). All of their cakes are not too sweet.

The service is also very good. They’ve customized a whole spongecake for us when we asked if it could be made with chocolate frosting instead of whipped cream. They packed us a free chocolate eclair when we dropped by late at night. Occasionally, they give out small poundcake-like confections to the first 20 or so people who come in through their doors on a designated day, which they tell you about well in advance. As an added bonus, they’re open fairly late for a bakery, making it a perfect destination to satisfy an after dinner craving.

Nishiazabu Orange has a small cafe area with three tiny round tables where they will serve you coffee with your cake, but it’s not very comfortable. The bakery is about a 10-12 minute walk from Hiroo near the Nishiazabu intersection, so it’s probably not worth going out of your way to visit, but if you live in the area, it’s a nice change from the Ruelle de Derriere bakery cafe a few feet down the street.

  1. [...] Ruelle de Derriere is everywhere these days, but the one we go to is the main store in Nishiazabu, about a 10 minute walk from Hiroo and right near Nishiazabu Orange. [...]
